Junior Logan Xayaseng began sewing and altering clothing to save money and learn something new. He posted his sewing journey online to keep track of his progress, gaining nearly 2k followers on his Instagram, @el_loganx since January.
This interest began long before he learned to sew, but rather while trying to improve his style after a trip with his family to Laos and Thailand.
“When I went to Asia, they had a lot of different styles that piqued my interest,” Xayaseng said. “There, what you wore showed what you were interested in and was a way to represent yourself.”
Maddie Wolf, one of Xayaseng’s friends who previously attended The King’s Academy, has been posting lifestyle/fashion consistently since 2024. Xayaseng already enjoyed the editing process and inspired by Wolf, he began spontaneously posting fit checks, where he shows off his outfits by posing in front of the camera to trendy music.
Buying new clothes became expensive, so Xayaseng taught himself to sew instead to change up his style and create unique pieces.
“I just wanted a pair of baggy sweatpants and didn’t have any money, so I just looked up how to make it by altering other pairs of clothes,” Xayaseng said. “From that, it turned to making my own stuff.”
His aunt, who has helped a cousin of his learn to sew, came across the account and wanted to help him. Now, they meet weekly to work on new projects as he continues to post them on Instagram.
“I’m really proud of him for making this account and sharing what he makes because he is not super open when you first meet him,” junior Gia Larkin, Xayaseng’s friend from tennis, said. “I don’t know anyone else who is doing that, and it is cool that he found his niche.”
After gaining some followers, Xayaseng set out with the goal of posting daily, but recognizing his need for a restful hobby, he decided to stop and only post when he wants to. Struggling with the need to be perfect in other areas of his life, like school and tennis, Xayaseng ensures to keep sewing an area which he allows himself to make mistakes.
“With school work and things like that, it is something I have to be good at, but with sewing, I can just start from scratch,” Xayaseng said. “It is something I don’t have to plan out or try to be perfect at.”
Instead of striving for perfection and creating another job or to-do for himself, Xayaseng makes an effort to keep sewing a relaxing hobby. It feels like the only area of life where he does not need to strive for perfection. Unlike school and tennis, there is no pressure, and he feels free to make mistakes.
“I don’t post daily anymore because it kind of feels like more of a job, so I’ve just been posting if I start making something that I like or if I have an outfit,” Xayaseng said.
Xayaseng does not only make clothing for himself, but he has made a skirt for his sister, sophomore Lilly Xayaseng. He is also making crewnecks for his friends on the TKA tennis team.
“I want to learn how to make more pieces from scratch,” Xayaseng said. “Right now, I am just altering stuff, but I want to make my own clothes after gaining some experience and learning more about it.”
