Updated food pyramid impacts views on health

In January 2026, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services flipped the food pyramid entirely upside down. One of the biggest changes is that grains, which were once considered the most important part of the food pyramid, are now the least, whereas proteins are now one of the largest groups. The new food pyramid has greater emphasis on whole foods and eating less processed foods.
“‘It’s upside down, a lot of you will say, but it was actually upside down before, and we just righted it,’ Kennedy told reporters,” Forbes reporter Antonio Pequeño IV said in an article titled “RFK Jr. Announces New Food Pyramid.”
Instead of the pyramid being right-side up like the 1992 food pyramid, it is now inverted. The new pyramid puts grains as the smallest focus of healthy food and makes proteins, dairy and fats equally as important as fruits and vegetables.
“The changes appear to be focused on helping Americans become more healthy overall, starting with food,” health teacher Mrs. Tina Barker said.
The Paragon Health Institute gives evidence that consuming too much processed food can increase the possibility of diseases, which is why focusing on eating healthier is important.
“Researchers reviewed studies analyzing highly processed foods’ impact on health outcomes and concluded that diets high in these foods are associated with higher rates of chronic disease,” Gabrielle Kalisz and Katherine Hall said on the Paragon Health Institute.
According to the CDC, 75% of adult Americans have a chronic disease. Eating healthier whole foods is one helpful way to combat some diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and more. Fighting diseases is one of the purposes of the new food pyramid.
“We have much more knowledge now that the introduction of ultra-processed foods has resulted in an increase in chronic inflammation, obesity and disease,” author and double board-certified reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Natalie Crawford said. “Transitioning back to a diet full of whole food and healthy fats and protein are important.”
The government made dietary guidelines in 1980, which highlighted eating a variety of foods in order to get nutrients. This eventually led to the making of the food pyramid in 1992.
“[In the 1992 food pyramid], grains like bread, cereal, rice and pasta were touted as the foundation of a balanced diet– the recommendation in the chart was six to 11 servings of grains per day,” health correspondent Hilary Brueck said on Business Insider.
In 2011, MyPlate was created as a visual of a plate that prioritized balancing food groups in everyday meals, with grains and vegetables being the largest portions. Brueck shares that MyPlate mainly brought confusion.
The 2025-2030 Food Pyramid seeks to bring greater clarity by emphasizing what’s truly healthy according to the Nutrition Source at Harvard School of Public Health.
“It is actually similar to how I eat,” high school coordinator and former health teacher Mrs. Kim Singer said. “My diet is higher in protein, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables and high-fiber carbs. I try to avoid processed foods and limit my sugar intake. We need to be eating cleaner, stay away from processed food, increase protein and increase high fiber foods.”
