TKA’s House System incorporates new ways to increase house points
The House System at The King’s Academy has been a staple for student culture and camaraderie for the past six years. It began during the 2020-2021 school year and since then, it has been important to students' time at TKA assemblies, events and school in general.
“The house system was originally designed to further the sense of being with people who are on Tuesday/Friday, Monday/Wednesday and in your house,” Student Council President Lilly Sherwood said. “You might not know them, but when you show up to these events and you're doing house things together, you then know that group of people and you build more friendships that way. I've met some good friends, believe it or not, through doing the houses at Kings.”
This year, Student Leadership Council is incorporating new and additional opportunities to increase house points and receive rewards. According to Student Leadership Council Advisor and Guidance Counselor Mrs. Ashley Smith, the goal of these new additions is to have team building across grades, genders, sessions and to see house culture come to life through friendship and school spirit.
“We're going to pick two games, one football game and one volleyball game, and that's going to be a house night where you show up and you show your ID because it's going to have your house printed on it, and we'll check you in,” Student Leadership Council Advisor Mrs. Hetrick said. “Whoever has the most people in attendance per house will get house points.”
Although the House Nights will only be for this sports season, there will be more events similar to this as other seasons start. Sherwood explains that SLC wants to add new things to be able to have a better year as a student body. Throughout the semesters, students will have a more engaged and enjoyable time. She claims that the house system has not been as big of a deal as it should have been in past years, and this is the year that will change.
“Mrs. Breaden, who served as Student Programs Director for many years, approached me because she knew of another school that had a house system in Ohio and she thought that sounded really fun and [asked if] Student Council would be interested in starting something like that,” Mrs. Smith said. “We brainstormed about how it could work and once we decided that that was something we wanted to pursue, [we] looked at the amount of students, how many houses we should have, the colors and what they should be named.”
During the school year, ducks will be hidden around the school for house points. It will only be for the first week of each month, but students will be able to go around the school, find a duck, hand it to Mrs. Smith and gain house points. Furthermore, all teachers and assistants have been sorted into houses and will be able to participate in gaining house points and showing school spirit.
“We have house shirts, which is a big deal,” Mrs. Hetrick said. “Each shirt is a different color per house and they are available through the spirit shop in the [TKA] app for $15.”
Along with wearing them to events and DAYL days, there will also be pop up House days where students are allowed to wear these shirts and will gain points for their houses if they do.
